Yoga is an ancient practice and lifestyle that encompasses many different beliefs, philosophies and traditions.
Its origins lie in ancient India, believed to have come from the Indus Valley Civilisation from between 3000-4000 years ago. Its roots lie in Hindu tradition and Yoga is one of the 6 main Darshanas (schools of thought, or philosophical systems).
When yoga came to the west in the 1800 and 1900s, the focus shifted more from a philosophical and belief system, into more of what we see today. With It being heavily movement focused, and a lot less about its roots and traditions.
When we think of Yoga, we'll probably think of various shapes that we can make with the body, breathing practices, and meditation. There's much, much, much more to it, and I strongly believe its important to honour the very roots of this practice and where its come from.
